The book "The Veteran Sea Scout" chronicles several experiences I had during my time in the Sea Explorer program. One of my fondest memories from being a Sea Scout was the haul-out of my Sea Scout Ship, Reliance, at the Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard. This event was particularly significant for two reasons: I had always wanted to see the inside of the Hunter's Point Naval Base, and it was conveniently located just down the street from where I lived at the time. The experience was a dream come true and an opportunity to delve deeper into the history of this World War II military base.
My cousin Winston and I were fortunate to have our Sea Scout Ship right in our own neighborhood. The work we accomplished while the ship was on dry land prepared it for that year's summer cruise. This experience not only fulfilled a long-held curiosity but also strengthened my connection to the local maritime history and community. The time spent at the shipyard remains one of the most memorable and educational highlights of my Sea Scout journey.
