ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

"Gloria Felipe looked at the cover story of the freshly-printed newspaper as if she was seeing a ship headed for open sea at night. A sea that was also inside of her."

The lives of Gloria Felipe and Nuria Valencia intertwine around the kidnapping of a little girl that shocked the Mexican capital in the 1940s. By means of a narrator that (in her own words) "can flex her writing muscles quite well," we witness the Miranda-Felipe's battle to get the youngest of their clan back, and the distressing upbringing within the Fernandez-Valencia family to save their own little girl from a potential danger which the police hasn't been able to stop and the media reports with the tone of a thriller.

Pierced by different water images--in the form of rain, sea, breeze, pond, or puddle--that reflect the mood of the characters, Dream as Trees Do offers a critical overview of the mandates of motherhood, but also shows the possibilities of rebellion and self-determination that mid-century women brought forth for us. Brenda Lozano's clever and sharp sense of humor makes it impossible to put the book down until you've turned the very last page.
