In a mysterious package that arrives at the office, Robin Ellacott is horrorized to find a woman's leg.

Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is as alarmed, if not more, by the discovery, although much less surprised. There are four people in his past that could be involved in the shipment, and Strike knows that all of them are capable of acting in such a cruel and abominable manner.

While the police concentrate on the only clue that Strike has ruled out, he and Robin decide to investigate on their own and submerge themselves in the sinister world of the other three suspects.
