Known as "the Butcher of Rostov", he committed sexual assaults, murders, mutilations and cannibalisms of women and children between 1978 and 1990 in Rostov-on-Don, a city located in the southwest of European Russia. He confessed to a total of 56 murders and was tried for 53 in April 1992. Condemned to death and in non-denial of his crimes, he was shot in the neck in February 1994 in the Rostov-on-Don prison. He probably wanted to die to stop the beast within that dominated him for so many years and drove him to commit so many heinous crimes without remorse.
