SILAS BARNUM CHATFIELD, the son of Levi and Sarah Runnels Chatfield, moved with his parents from New Milford, Connecticut to Otselic, Chenango County, New York when he was a young boy. Silas, an orphan at the age of ten was bound to a nearby farmer until Silas turned eighteen. Silas traveled for a few years until finally settling in Troy, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Silas married twice, prospered as a farmer and mill owner, built a large farmhouse, and raised a large family. The farmhouse that Silas Chatfield built in 1879 still stands today, and many of his descendants still live in the area.
