Most Americans think of the Revolutionary War as happening in the original 13 colonies. But Louisiana's French Creoles played a key role in the war, which captured the control of the Mississippi River from the British, blocking the British Army from this vital access route. Louisiana, although largely French in population, was under the Spanish flag, and when Spain entered the American Revolutionary War, the ancestors of several well known families Pointe Coupee and Avoyelles of today joined the local Spanish militia groups. They marched along the Mississippi River and were involved in the capture of five strategic sites: Thompson Creek, Amite, Maniac, Baton Rouge and Natchez. Most of these soldiers were second and third generation French Creoles, accustomed to the swamps and knew how to use a gun. Pointe Coupee Post had been founded by their parents French immigrants. Many of the soldiers were brothers, cousins, brothers in laws of one another. Some families produced as many as three brothers who fought including Bergeron, DeCuir, Joffrion, Pourceau and Porche This book gives some detail to the French Creole soldiers and officers who were on the 1777 roster and who fought in the war.
