The interesting part of this work by Bonaventure is that for us it is a return to mysticism for a Church which has been embattled by the sophistication of the rational to a point that the only mystic experience we are permitted to tolerate these days is that of sci-fi films, paranormal documentaries, or popular film culture which insists we believe in something "out there" without ever daring to suggest that God may be "out there." Enter, Bonaventure, from the 13th century who suggests to us 800 years later, that knowing God is not some philosophic jeu des enfants but something more akin to love.
