The Kabul Conscript is a tale of friendship, intrigue, and deception set in Afghanistan during the summer of 1973. David Stuckrath, a Peace Corps Volunteer, becomes involved in a dangerous adventure with other young Americans and Afghans in the days leading up to the coup d'tat by General Daoud Khan. The busy bazaars of Kabul are liberally salted with youthful trekkers, spies of a dozen nations, and the emerging communist and fundamentalist devotees. David befriends an AWOL soldier, accused of treason, who is pursued by his vicious captain and a formidable intelligence agent. The enigmatic expatriate, Conrad Slocum, comes to their aid. At the same time the friends must deal with the plight of a young Afghan woman trying to escape the horror of a forced marriage to a violent fianc.
The Kabul Conscript is a "Conrad Slocum" novel, and a prequel to Cape Decision.
