Joshua's Letters to Jesus was inspired by the work I do with children diagnosed with autism. Autism is a developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior. Children on the autism spectrum may not feel like they may have a voice due to the severity of the disability. I believe it is important for children to have advocates to help them in life, especially in social interactions with others.
In this story, Jesus is the voice for Joshua who lets Joshua know that he is fearfully and wonderfully made, despite being diagnosed with autism.
