Joshua served Moses faithfully throughout his life, serving him in any way that he could, without thought to building up his own reputation among the people. When Moses asked God to appoint someone to lead the people after he would be gone, God immediately chose Joshua. There is no evidence that Joshua had aspirations of being the next leader, or of Moses specifically planning to have Joshua take over for him. Both men left that decision in God's hands.
