Daydream, Tenth Grade English Lit
Mr. Ethington opened the book,
cleared his throat and began to read:
Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote,
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote
And bathed every veyne in swich licur...
And under the weight of those lines
my attention began to crumble,
turning from the bespectacled balding man
at the front of the class
to the raven-haired Sharon
two desks to my left,
those legs, hem of skirt an inch or two
above the knees,
and I was no longer listening
to the drone of Chaucer,
but instead found myself lost
in a soft focus daydream
where we're slow dancing
at the Val Air, mirror ball
stirring much more than the ceiling,
Temptations singing
I've got sunshine on a cloudy day...
And half a life later here we are,
empty nesters slow dancing across
the living room floor
because dreams can be timeless.
As timeless as love.
