Bronze Coins Earn Beyond Expectations at Chris Rudd Sale

At Chris Rudd’s all-Celtic sale on January 19, bronze proved to be worth more than gold. The online auction offering a curated collection of coins from ancient Britain resulted in a joyous surprise for the Norwich-based auctioneer. The winning bids of two bronze coins soared above expectations and achieved high earnings. A “Bear and Bull” bronze unit from the Cantiaci tribe, who resided in modern-day Kent, was sold four times over its pre-auction estimate at £3,200. This issue is the only ancient British coin that depicts a bear and was likely made after Caesar’s crossings into Kent in 55 and 54 B.C. Another bronze unit, a “Cunobelinus Cunobelini” coin from the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes tribes, who lived in modern-day Southeastern England, achieved £1,100, nearly double the item’s estimate.
