Most people in Germany still vividly remember the introduction of the euro, the distribution of starter kits, and the first colorful bank notes that came out of ATMs shortly after the turn of 2001 to 2002. Many Germans also recall 1948, when the deutsche mark was introduced. However, another currency reform has largely faded from memory, even though it marked the birth of the “mark” as we know it today—a currency closely associated with the post-war “economic miracle” in Germany.
