Unlike the earlier years of Czar Nicholas I (1825–1855), the period from 1840 through 1844 was peaceful. There were no serious wars to disturb the horizon, though peasant uprisings continued, as always, to challenge the authority of the government. It was not until the serfs were freed in 1861 by Alexander II, however, that the problem was mostly solved. The most important economic fact in 1840 was that Russia had finally returned to hard currency since paper money was introduced by Catherine II in 1769. Nicholas I had given orders that the hated paper money once more become a servant of the state, not the other way around.
