What was life like under the Mongols? After they finished conquering, they set up a system of taxes. You paid them or else. If you did, they mostly let you do your thing, except when one of them decided they wanted something from you, in which case they came and took it and you either let them or they killed you. In those days that was considered “liberal.” They didn’t tell people how to live their lives, except when someone got an idea in the head. The governing philosophy was different in the Islamic and Christian zones. Those people, when they went a-conquering, wanted their conquests to convert to their religion.
