PHILIPPINES GOES POLYMER

Bank notes are occasionally referred to as “that green folding stuff.” This is not so in the Philippines, where bank notes are now being issued in polymer. The first modern polymer composition bank note was issued in 1988 through the Reserve Bank of Australia and developed with the University of Melbourne and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization. Many countries have followed Australia’s example since. The “Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas,” (BSP) or Philippines Central Bank, unveiled a new bank note series made with polymer on December 19, 2024. The announcement occurred during the Christmas holiday season since the demand for new and clean bank notes and coins for use as cash gifts or “aguinaldo” is high.
