Some people might consider it an inconvenience to be asked to house-sit for a neighbour two weeks before Christmas, but when Chloe and Zaf asked me, I was flattered. I was in awe of them – especially Chloe. I’d started chatting to her over the garden wall when she said nice things about my lilies. Because of my green fingers, she asked me to take care of her orchids while they were away. I waited two full days before I went over. I told myself not to give in to the impulse to snoop.
