“It’s never too late to learn new things. I’d worked for 30 odd years in the NHS, but realised it was becoming so samey – I was bored. I thought, ‘What do I do?’ I retired, but after six months, I didn’t like it. Then I thought, ‘Is this going to be it until I die?’ And Bake Off came along and it was the best thing that could have happened; an enormous catalyst for change.
Until I retired, I wasn’t a very good baker. I didn’t bake many cakes, mostly pies for my family. Bake Off focused my mind and I taught myself all these baking disciplines. It’s like anything, the more you know, the more there is to know. It’s nearly eight years since I won.
