Rievaulx Abbey Near Helmsley, North Yorkshire For full-on wow factor, head to this Yorkshire site. Set in a beautiful valley, the abbey’s huge walls and arches soar up to open sky, creating a haunting silhouette. Founded in 1132, Rievaulx was the first Cistercian monastery in the north of England. But Henry VIII had it stripped of its wealth, including its valuable lead, in 1538.
