Think of a window box as a tiny stage. Plants with flowers are the stars that come and go, while foliage is the backdrop that sets the scene. Here’s some inspiration for using frost-hardy plants that will give your home some winter cheer. Scene setters For backdrops, try planting neat rows of dwarf cypresses for an instant winter forest, or create texture, colour and movement with grasses, such as Japanese sedge ‘Evergold’, bronze-leaved Carex or steel-blue Festuca glauca. Heucheras, with leaves in shades of near-black to lime, will look very dramatic, as well as heucherellas. Add the right flowers and your boxes will burst with colour for months.
