Actor and author Sheila Hancock won’t settle for contentment – she’s too busy fighting injustice

I was raised not to let others down, to ‘pull myself together’ and have a ‘stiff upper lip’. My dad was a pub landlord, a job in which you are meant to be relentlessly jolly. Despite having had TB and coped with relative poverty, if a customer asked how he was feeling, he would reply ‘mustn’t grumble’. I think now, why the hell not? At 89, I definitely haven’t learnt the seemingly obligatory contentment of advanced years. Contentment isn’t a goal I seek because it seems a bit ‘I’m alright, Jack’ and to hell with everyone else. ‘Many young people I know are avid for change’ There’s so much to be angry about in the world.
