DEUR MARTINETTE LOUW

Wanneer ’n mens die Kalahari besoek, verwag jy rooi duine. As jy dan skielik ’n strook wit duine – sowat 9 km lank en 5 km wyd – in die verte sien verrys, voel dit soos oëverblindery. Dié sandduine is deel van Witsand-natuurreservaat (35 km²) wat byna reg in die middel van die groot blok plase tussen Upington, Olifantshoek, Griekwastad en Groblershoop aan die voet van die Langberg lê. Die kleur is te danke aan kwartsietklip diep onder die duine. Dié ondeurdringbare klip vorm ’n kom waar reën- en grondwater opgaar – na raming is daar sowat 1 211 miljoen m³ water! Oor die jare heen het dié water die ysteroksied wat die Kalahari-duine rooi maak, uitgewas en die sand ’n bleekwit kleur agtergelaat. Maar die eintlike trekpleister is nie…
