L’homme qui meurt, ce mercredi-là, d’une insuffisance hépatique – il a toujours été un sacré buveur – à l’âge de 66 ans, près de Hanovre à Hildesheim en Allemagne de l’Ouest, n’est pas encore le Schindler de la liste. Oskar Schindler doit la postérité à un ouvrier juif qu’il a sauvé, Poldek Pfefferberg, installé à Los Angeles dans les années 1970. Lorsqu’il apprend sa disparition, il veut convaincre Hollywood de s’intéresser à la vie de son ancien patron. Il rencontre en 1980 le romancier australien Thomas Keneally qui, après deux années de recherches et de vérifications, fait paraître un livre : La Liste de Schindler.
