Ruscha –hour — En 1963, alors qu’il vient tout juste de terminer ses études d’art, à 26 ans, Ed Ruscha rencontre Marcel Duchamp à Pasadena dans le cadre d’une rétrospective organisée dans le musée local par son ami Walter Hopps. Duchamp fascine les jeunes Américains, dont Andy Warhol, 35 ans, qui assiste lui aussi au vernissage. Ed Ruscha restera toute sa vie influencé par la radicalité de Duchamp, son sens de l’humour et son goût pour les objets sans qualité : « Plus je suis entré dans Duchamp, plus j’ai compris qu’il voyait le monde à la manière d’un savant et aussi d’un écrivain. Et qu’il était allé voir d’un côté où personne n’était allé. Une part de son mystère tenait aussi à sa manière très dépouillée de vivre. »…
