WHEN MY FAMILY MOVED TO PRETORIA I WAS A FIVE-YEAR-OLD GIRL EXCITED FOR AN ADVENTURE.We lived in a small township called Makwarela in the former Bantustan of Venda, now Limpopo. My mother went to Pretoria for a few weeks first to survey the lay of the land. She wasn’t sure whether to thrust her family into a new normal, a world we knew nothing about. When she recounts the story, she says I told her she was not allowed to leave us ever again. If she was moving, so were we. Initially my dad stayed behind to look for a job and, since my brother didn’t want to move, he stayed, too. We lived in Sunnyside for two years and then, in 1997 when my father and my brother officially joined…
