Das Dorf Umoja wurde von Frauen für Frauen gegründet – Männer müssen draußen bleiben

Umoja / Kenia – Ausgelassen tanzen sie einen traditionellen Tanz, halten sich an den Händen, lachen. Einen Grund zu feiern haben die Frauen im Dorf Umoja jeden Tag: Die selbst erkämpfte Freiheit! Männer sucht man hier vergeblich, sie dürfen hier nicht leben. Gegründet haben das Dorf 15 Frauen im Jahr 1990, nachdem sie von britischen Soldaten aus einem nahen Trainingslager vergewaltigt worden waren. Umoja sollte ein sicherer Ort sein, abseits der europäischen Peiniger und der frauenfeindlichen Traditionen in den eigenen Samburu-Dörfern. Und das ist gelungen. Heute leben hier rund 50 Frauen und an die 200 Kinder. Sie sind aus ihren Heimatdörfern geflohen vor Vergewaltigung, Kinderehen und häuslicher Gewalt. „Umoja“ bedeutet „Einheit“ auf Suaheli – das passt zu den Frauen im Dorf.
