Wenige Männer reichen aus, um Hunderte mächtiger Büffel zu führen – doch dafür gibt es einen Grund

Sirajganj / Bangladesch Eigentlich ist der Bezirk ziemlich grün. Doch natürlich gibt es in Sirajganj, nordwestlich der Hauptstadt Dhaka gelegen, auch trockene Gebiete. Was doof ist, wenn man dort Wasserbüffel züchtet. Zur Abkühlung, zum Fressen und zum Aufbau der für Insekten undurchdringlichen Schlammschicht auf dem Körper brauchen die Tiere offene Feuchtgebiete. Deshalb werden rund 200 von ihnen jeden Tag zum Fluss Jamuna geführt, wo sie sich etwa vier Stunden aufhalten und suhlen. Kein Wunder also, dass die seit Langem in Asien domestizierten Paarhufer sich gern auf den Weg machen, gemütlich trottend. Wie bei Rindern üblich werden die rund eine halbe Tonne schweren Tiere in der Landwirtschaft als Zugtiere eingesetzt, sie geben Milch und Fleisch, beweiden aber auch Feuchtbrachen.
