The Sheffield Shield may have been split into two blocks, to allow the more glamorous Big Bash League to take centrestage over Christmas and the New Year, but the old adages remain. You can’t play Test cricket for Australia unless you dominate in the Sheffield Shield. Even the most stunning performances at white-ball levels are discounted as national selection chairman George Bailey and his colleagues select their Test squad at each summer start.
