One thing I love about running is that the best performance of the day wins. Sure, sometimes it might be luck that another runner is ill or luck that you didn’t follow the lead pack the wrong way on a 2-mile detour, but ultimately running is really very fair – same start line, same finish line, use your smarts and your fitness to see who can get from point A to point B in the least amount of time. I would never have taken up a sport like figure skating (admittedly for a myriad of reasons) where a panel of judges rank athletes based on their perception of an individual’s performance – that’s far too wishy-washy for me.
