Det var en fredag i december 1996, og det var julefrokosttid på Christiansborg. Mit parti, Centrum-Demokraterne, var med i regering under statsminister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, men det havde knirket længe. Vi fik ikke rigtigt resultater ud af anstrengelserne, og vores bagland fattede ikke helt, hvorfor vi egentlig var i regering. Jeg gik derfor til folketingsgruppen og foreslog, at vi trådte ud af regeringssamarbejdet. Det var de enige i, selv om vi vidste, det var usædvanligt, at et parti frivilligt forlod en regering.
