South Carolina writer Chalmers Swinton Murray (1894 - 1975) grew up on Edisto Island, studied at The Citadel, and was known for his non-fiction and fiction books and stories about his home state. This little book of the author's memories from his childhood and teen years depicts life on Edisto, a rural barrier island, at the turn of the 20th century. Modes of transportation from horse, buggy and steamship, to railroad, to the first automobiles carry him to and from his home, to which he would return throughout his life.
