Roberto Cofresi, the son of an Italian immigrant, was born in Puerto Rico in 1791. He was raised in the vicinity of Cabo Rojo and as a child he was drawn to a life at sea. By the time he was fourteen, he'd joined privateers cruising the waters of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and in the following decades he became a pirate of wide renown, terrorizing ships of all nations. The American government found him to be a threat of such magnitude that they sent a squadron of naval vessels to the region to hunt him down. After more than twenty years of freebooting, Cofresi was finally captured, but not before he'd hidden a number of treasures on both sides of the Mona Channel. This is the story of "The Treasures of Roberto Cofresi."
