At 10.5 miles long, one mile wide and 219ft deep, Windermere is England’s largest lake. This route is your chance to hike around the entire lake in a 3-day expedition, ditching the car and travelling to the Lakes by train instead. From the railway station, the Windermere Way completes a 68km anti-clockwise loop of the ‘mere’, at times hugging the shoreline, at others ascending inland for more expansive views. The route visits the summits of Orrest Head, Wansfell Pike, Loughrigg Fell and Gummer’s How for a taste of Lakeland’s mountains. But, in truth, this walk is about much more than the hills.
