Place Fell rises proudly above Ullswater… and after this beautiful Lakeland walk you can catch the steamer back to Glenridding.

Think of Patterdale and Glenridding, nestled at the south end of Ullswater, and you might start to dream about Striding Edge and the Helvellyn range. But don’t forget the fells on the east side of the lake where, as a rule, there aren’t quite as many walkers – but there are just as many views. The broad sweep of Place Fell and its pudding-like little sister, Hallin Fell, offer helicopter pilot panoramas across Ullswater but also let you peer into the bold empty hills around Martindale. Best of all, this linear walk finishes with a seat on a steamer, from the pier at Howtown, for a relaxing return down the lake.
