Some hills are so good there’s just too much choice. This route combines the sunniest sides of Yorkshire’s finest into a linear day walk full of highlights.

There’s no denying Ingleborough is a classic hill, and for good reason - it’s just that all the routes are so good the choice can be impossible! Luckily, public transport means you can combine multiple sides of the hill in a linear walk, whether via train, or this sun-facing south-to-west option using the bus. There’s an optional foray into Ingleborough Cave before threading the chasm of Trow Gill, peering into the abyss at Gaping Gill, then climbing steadily onto one of Yorkshire’s highest peaks complete with 360° views over the Dales and Lakes from the summit plateau. Originally thought to be an Iron Age hill-fort with perimeter wall and hut circles, archaeologists now suggest the summit was home to an older, Bronze Age site with ring cairns hosting open air ‘sky…
