Head away from the crowds of Pen y Fan to discover a quieter side of the Brecon Beacons with moorland cairns and caves to explore.

Blaen y Glyn car park is a common place to kick off an epic round of the Pen y Fan horseshoe with its surrounding peaks. But if you’ve had your fill of the crowdmagnets of the Brecon Beacons, it’s certainly not the only mountain worth a visit. Also starting from Blaen y Glyn, this route heads southwards instead, across empty moorland to the disused Hendre and Blaen Dyffryn limestone quarries and onwards to the Chartist Cave. There’s big views across Talybont reservoir as you stay high, ticking off summit cairns. Eventually you’ll arrive at the quarries that mark the area’s industrial past.
