Ben Lawers is a famed botanical hotspot and very popular Munro. To take the pressure off, here are three nearby hills where these high-mountain specialists can be found:
Beinn Laoigh (Ben Lui) At 1130m, Ben Lui isn’t much shorter than Ben Lawers and, like Lawers, has a base-rich soil that supports a number of Arctic-Alpines. Look out for flowers such as Mossy Saxifrage and Mountain Avens on the crags, and high-altitude mires characterised by Yellow Saxifrage.
Beinn Sheasgarnaich Secreted down the west end of Glen Lyon and swamped by bog, Beinn Sheasgarnaich is a challenge in itself but it offers a fine viewpoint and rich and diverse highaltitude grasslands. Look for Alpine Bistort, Hairy Lady’s-Mantle and the rare Mountain Ringlet butterfly.
