Martin Finnin at John Martin Gallery Irish artist Martin Finnin’s loud, sprightly abstract paintings belie a superb technical skill and a mastery of colour. Joyous things, without seeming in the slightest bit kitsch, it’s hard to look at the works on show in this new exhibition and not feel cheered up in some way. The inspiration for much of Finnin’s work comes from the industrial skyline of the port in Cork, his home town, but his paintings transform the cooling towers and cranes into exuberant, expressive shapes in turquoise, explosive orange or warm yellow. They seem to have much in common with the more whimsical side of 1960s British pop art – Peter Blake in a good mood, perhaps, or even Eduardo Paolozzi’s bright collages.
