No Titty in Swallows and Amazons – but plenty of spies
There’s always a slight feeling of dread when you hear that a beloved children’s book is being turned into a film, said Jane Shilling in The Daily Telegraph. And my pessimism on hearing of the BBC’s forthcoming adaptation of Swallows and Amazons – Arthur Ransome’s classic tale of the adventures of the Walker children – was not entirely ill-founded. Did they have to change the name of one of the children from Titty to Tatty, simply because Titty might cause the odd snigger? Was it necessary to insert a subplot involving dastardly Russian spies into an innocent story of a group of children messing about in boats in the 1930s Lake District? What makes this especially infuriating is that Titty was a real person, said Barbara Altounyan in The Sunday Times.…
