Love and Friendship Dir: Whit Stillman 1hr 32mins (U) A hilarious, elegant Jane Austen adaptation On learning that an American independent film-maker was adapting Lady Susan, Jane Austen’s early novel, I was filled with foreboding, said Nigel Andrews in the FT. Needlessly so. Whit Stillman’s film is wonderful. Kate Beckinsale plays the unscrupulous Lady Susan Vernon, a widow devoted to finding rich husbands for herself and her pretty daughter (Morfydd Clark), in the face of every obstacle thrown in her path by the targets’ concerned relatives. “What audacity, what elegance,” said Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian. Thanks to the verbal flair Stillman brings to Austen’s lightweight tale, this comedy feels like “an undiscovered Oscar Wilde play”.
