National Grid/Macquarie: Vampire strike With energy security at the top of the national agenda, National Grid has picked a terrific time to flog off a 60% stake in Britain’s gas pipeline network to a foreign investor, said Archie Mitchell in the Daily Mail – particularly one as controversial as Macquarie. The Aussie investment bank may be the world’s largest infrastructure investor, with more than £50bn already invested in the UK, but its“reputation for buying companies, loading them with debt and sucking money out for shareholders” – as it did at Thames Water – has earned it the nickname “the Vampire Kangaroo”.
