“On the face of it, the Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch seems to have said something reasonable about the teaching of British empire: the positives of imperialism should be taught alongside the negatives. But it falls apart on examination. How much sense does it make to ‘balance’ colonial crimes, such as the deaths of millions in the Indian and Irish famines, against, say, the introduction of railways? Seeking to have pride or shame in history this long is like being proud or ashamed of the wind, or the colour purple.
