US set to celebrate Hispanic heritage

National Hispanic Heritage Month will begin on September 15 and run through October 15. It marks the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans. This year’s theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” Unidos is the Spanish word for “united.” Hispanic heritage refers to the history and culture of people from the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, and South America. Nearly 19% of the US population, about 62.1 million people, identify as Hispanic. Official national recognition of Hispanic heritage began as a one-week celebration in 1968. In 1988, the US Congress (branch of government that makes laws) expanded the celebration to a month. The month begins on September 15 to mark the day in 1821 when five Central American countries gained their independence after being ruled by Spain.…
