Africa’s tallest peak gets wifi

The government of Tanzania announced on August 16 that Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, now has high-speed internet access. Wifi is currently available for the lower two-thirds of the mountain and should be extended to the peak, at 19,341 feet, by the end of 2022. Each year, about 30,000 people try to climb Kilimanjaro, and 80,000 guides and other workers help them. The trek is difficult, and climbers often get hurt. Up to 10 people die on the mountain each year. Government officials said that wifi will increase safety, allowing people on the mountain to more easily communicate with rescue and medical workers.
