Many people think there’s no better sweet than chocolate, while others say no way.

Every Halloween, Americans buy about 600 million pounds of candy to give out—that adds up to nearly the entire weight of the Empire State Building. From M&M’s to Milky Way bars, Skittles to Starburst, there are a ton of different choices for trick-or-treaters (who are sometimes known to dig around in the candy bowl to find their favorite). And at the end of the night, kids across the country count, sort, and trade their candy haul.
