AI can turn thoughts into text

People with a brain disorder called aphasia struggle to understand spoken language or find the words to express what they’re thinking. Scientists have found a way to help them with a “brain decoding” tool that converts their thoughts into text. The tool scans and tracks a person’s brain activity. Then artificial intelligence (AI, when computers learn) matches specific brain activity to certain words or phrases, creating a “language” for that person. A previous version of the tool required each person to train the AI by spending 16 hours in a scanning machine while listening to podcasts. But that was impractical.
