Who was King Tut?
King Tutankhamun, who is also known as King Tut or the Boy King, ruled Egypt during the 14th century BCE. He became pharaoh when he was 9 years old but died when he was 19, most likely from disease. In one of the most significant finds in archaeological history, King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922 by the archaeologist Howard Carter. The find made Carter—and King Tut—famous. Tut’s mummy was buried inside three coffins and covered with an elaborate mask of solid gold (above). Thousands of other artifacts were found within the tomb, including jewelry, amulets, weapons, and gold-covered chariots. Many of these artifacts, including the gold mask, have toured the world and are now on display at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, Egypt.…
