Holi celebrations begin globally

On March 14, thousands of people across India and around the world will celebrate Holi (pronounced HOE-lee). Known as the festival of colors, the holiday marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring for people who follow the Hindu religion. Holi also signifies the triumph of good over evil and light over dark. People have been celebrating Holi since at least the 4th century. In many parts of India, festivities begin the previous night when a bonfire is lit with wood and dried leaves. On the day of Holi, people throw water balloons at fellow revelers and toss brightly colored powder at one another.
