Milestone for wolves in Yellowstone

This month marks 30 years since wild gray wolves were released in Yellowstone National Park after having been absent from the area for decades. Their return has given scientists a rare opportunity to research what happens in an ecosystem (group of plants and animals that affect one another) when a key species is reintroduced. Yellowstone is America’s first national park. After it was established in 1872, rangers began a campaign to eliminate wolves from the area because they saw the animals as a threat to people and livestock. The last two wolves in the park were killed in 1926. In 1978, wolves were listed as endangered in most of the US.
