Advocate for snails

Kalikoonāmaukūpuna Kalāhiki, a 24-year-old Native Hawaiian, is responsible for getting a new law passed in Hawaii, designating nine kāhuli (the Hawaiian word for native land snails) as the state’s official snails. As a high school volunteer at a museum in Honolulu, Kalāhiki learned about the cultural significance of snails—known as“the jewels of the forest” in Hawaii. With snails facing increasing environmental threats, Kalāhiki started a movement to have the state protect them. Thanks to community support, the law passed in April.…
